MK5 Production Golf GTI Build Costs

There are several options in preparing a MK5 Golf GTI to go racing:

  • Have one specifically prepared
    • There are plenty of companies out there which will source and build a car to your own personal specification and budget. Expect to pay anything from £10-£15k. Here are some companies which have already built several MK5 Golf GTI race cars:
  • Buy a car already prepared
    • Cars are changing hands for around £15k upwards. However the huge benefit is that it will be a car which may have race history.
  • Part prepare it yourself
    • The most common route is where racers will do some of the prep work themselves to keep the labour costs down and then use specialists to do the tasks which require highly trained skills, for example fitting and painting the roll cages. 
  • Daily Drivers to Race Cars
    • This gives the option of converting a car over a period of time to stagger the costs. This is what a lot of the current and future grid have and are doing. They have a car which they are using as daily driver and slowly upgrading the parts. 
    • Obviously the stripping out of the interior, fitting the cage and stiff suspension is left one of the last jobs to keep it comfortable for road use.
    • The huge bonus for these cars is that the 2nd hand market for parts is very vibrant and the standard, wheels, interior and entertainment system can recoup a substantial amount of the original purchase.
